The Padres showed some resolve and determination to gut out a tough win against Santa Cruz on Tuesday night in Santa Cruz.
Zack Olivas shouldered the load in 2 meters and had one of his finest games of the year while punching 7 goals. Trey Coppinger and Chimay Skinner had great scoring games as well and added 3 goals each while also providing great defense. Kenny Doo really shut down 2 meters on defense once again and Brett Luch added great all around play once again for the Padres contributing goals, assists, and steals.
Sam Sunde was really sharp in the cage with 16 saves as he battled one of the tougher shooters we've faced yet this season.
The game was tied with 19 seconds when Trey Coppinger displayed his late game heroics. Off the timeout, Trey was fouled outside 5 meters. He took a heavily guarded shot from the weak side and skipped it cross cage into the back of the net as the clock hit 5 seconds. Santa Cruz called timeout and designed a play. The play never took place as Zack Olivas shut the door by stealing the inbounds pass and swimming out the clock.
Both the JV and Freshman teams won their games handily. Both the JV and Frosh teams continue to progress and improve rapidly. We are pleased with what we see to this point.
It's hard to believe, but we are nearing October and with the game in Santa Cruz, we have finished the first go around of the league, playing everyone once. Carmel is currently 8 wins and only 1 loss coming to Soquel. Every team we play in league is tough. Nothing has been easy and we do not expect that to change.
This is a very hard working team and I am pleased with our success thus far. I do believe that this team will continue to improve as the season moves on.
Big game with Monterey on Thursday @ Carmel.
Frosh play an intersquad scrimmage at 3:30
JV play Monterey @ 5pm
Varsity plays Monterey @ 6pm
