Spirit Pack
Mrs. Trapin has determined that the cost/player for the T-shirt and sweatshirt is $25.50. The team is paying for you suit. Please take your payment to Mrs. Vita, ASB secretary, in the school office. She will give you a receipt. Please save that receipt so you can show Mrs. Trapin that you have paid when you pick up the items from her. She will probably hand out the clothing at one of our practices once the majority have paid so don't delay.

Suit sizes
Leslie Trapin is getting less than the response she needs in getting suit sizes. She currently only has 12 of 42 that are currently on the roster. If I remove the freshman (14) who have just given me theirs that still leaves 16 that we need an update on. Freshman parents may want to second guess their son's input also.
The suits take 2-3 weeks to receive once the order is placed and we can only wait so long to place the order and receive them before the first game on 30 August and tournament 31 Aug/01 Sept. If we don't receive input we will use what I have on the rooster from last year which may or may not be correct. So please submit your size to her as posted on the blog.

Athletic Department Paperwork
To date I only have 3 emergency cards and we had over 40 players at practice today. From some of the questions I have gotten and a couple of people attempting to give the paperwork to me it is obvious that some have not read the blog. We expect all team members to have signed up for blog emails and to check their email at least once/day. This is a life skill you need to get comfortable with because more and more communication is done via email and web pages. Unless you are getting your physical at CHS on 11 Aug between 10-12 we need to have your emergency card by Tuesday 07 Aug if you want to avoid the crowds or Wednesday at the latest. The fee is $35. Again you pick up the forms in the office corridor it you don't have them by now and you must submit them to Debbie Lemos and get all the required initials and then bring the emergency card to Coach Langland. Thanks for your cooperation and keep up the good work. We know you are sore but it will only get better as you get in shape.

Communicating with your coaches
Today I got an email from one of the freshman saying he couldn't make practice. I'm impressed because we hadn't put out what the team procedures are on this subject so:
If you are not able to make practice it is your responsibility (not you parents, we don't want to hear it from them) to contact your coach and let him know about your problem. You can email or phone your coach. The contact info is the following:
Varsity: Coach Gaily - 521-7993 or drgaily@gmail.com
JV: Coach Sigourney - 809-2511 or edsigourney@gmail.com
Freshman: Coach Hertlein - 236-0295 or chertlein7@gmail.com

Preseason Reminder
A reminder that Hell Week is rapidly approaching (3 weeks). To be able to practice we will have to have a copy of the Summer Activities Liability & Medical Release/Consent Waiver. We only got 6 of them as school was getting out. Be sure to get your physical and fill out the required packet of paperwork. As mentioned before Debbie Lemos, athletic department secretary, will be available starting 1 August to sign the required forms, collect your money and give you the copy of the Emergency Card that needs to be given to the coaching staff. Be sure to do this BEFORE school starts, Starting the first day of school, 10 August, you will not be able to practice unless we have your Emergency Card.

Transportation forms
Forms that are required for transporting players were sent via emails and are probably on the CHS website. These forms are turned into the office vice the coaches so if you get them filled out this summer you can turn them in in August.
Debbie Lemos, athletic department secretary, says she will be back to work on 1 August and would welcome getting required paperwork BEFORE school opens. She will review paperwork and accept the athletic fee and sign the emergency card which then needs to brought to the coaches before the player can participate in normal practices starting the first day of school. If you wait until the first day of school there is a good chance you will not be able to get the forms signed because of the rush of people trying to do the same.
Debbie said that turnout for the CHS sponsored physicals was less than expected so that must mean that many need to get them done by their family physicians this summer. The required form is included in the athletic packet. There are piles of the forms in the hall in the main admin building.
Any questions please email,
Rodger

Polo paperwork
All,
As you know, sports at CHS involves a lot of paperwork. Hopefully most of you were able to take advantage of the subsidized physicals offered at CHS a couple of weeks ago. If not be sure to get one this summer. The athletic packet (paperwork required for participating in a sport) are in a holder in the hall of the office building. Try to get one before school is out so you have all summer to get the forms filled out and can turn it in when hell week starts or as soon as you can get the required signatures from the office.
A waiver form needs to be filled out for any summer sports related activities. Coach Gaily is working on setting up some swimming options. If you have time to print out, sign and get back to school before the summer break please put the form in the boys water polo mail slot in the main office. If more convenient, scan and email to me at rlangland@comcast.net. This form needs to be filled out BEFORE participating in any summer activities as Athletic Director Golden says. The form is also available online under "Summer Sports Activities". The form apples to any activities between June 13th and August 13th.
Most of you are probably aware that the polo league was reorganized this spring and three Santa Cruz teams are now in our league. We will be playing each twice so that is twice as many games as last year. I have also been given a heads up and will be getting all the details to pass on that CUSD will only be providing transportation to league events. That means no buses for JV/Frosh tournaments. That means that we are going to need many parents to drive. Than means that you will need to have your car certified (most easily at Lemos 76) before you can drive. The required forms are available again on the office and probably on the CHS website. Doing that this summer may beat the crowd.
Welcome to the 2011 season,

Communications
Players and parents,
Over the last few years I have come to the realization that some of the polo boys have not transitioned into the 21st century modes of communicating (i.e. using email and web information). Some of this is a result of there being a family email address vice an address for each member of the family and the word does not get passed or passed quickly enough or if the boys have an email address they are not checking it daily or even more often than that.
Part of our polo program is to try and teach life skills and good citizenship in addition to the sport of water polo. I can speak from experience with both of my boys being in college that virtually all communication in college and college sports is done via email or a website including application to college, picking your classes, invoicing, makeup lectures or class notes, schedule definitions and changes, .... Todd, my older son, even convinced me that he needed web access on his phone even though it is fairly expensive because he was missing too may details by not getting home during the day to his computer or being able to get to a computer terminal at school to pick up daily details. There are not enough hours in the day to do everything with their busy schedule.
In an effort to try and improve our communication and response to deadlines (many of these are set to try to teach responsibility and timeliness) I would suggest that you get each of your water polo boys their own email address and whether they have one now or not that they learn to check it at least daily. This is a habit that they need to learn to survive and thrive in college. If there is expense involved with your ISP in doing this they can get a hotmail account which I believe is free. They need to sign up for the blog with their own email address once they get one.

Spirit Packs
From Cara Cohen:
The team speedo,t-shirt and sweatshirts should arrive late this week or early next week. All team members need to take a check to CHS ASB/cash for $60.00 to Ms. Vita in the admin office and get a receipt. The team account has already contributed $20/player toward the cost. Any questions call Cara at 238-6727 or email at cara@fc-cpa.com. After all players have received their clothes, extras can be bought separately for $27.50 each.

Transportation
With the larger varsity team this year we will always need one certified vehicle to help transport the team to tournaments in addition to one van and Coach Dew's car. Busses will not always be available for JV and freshman travel. Therefore we need some parents that have a multi passenger car to get their cars certified so they are cleared to transport boys other than their own. Certification and chaperone forms are available at the CHS office and an appointment can be made at Lemos 76 at head of the valley to have them check out your car. The fee is nominal. Please let me know when you have a certified car so I know what we have to work with.
If you want to take you son in your car from a tournament or remote game site you need to have filled out an alternate transportation form, also available at the CHS office, at least 48 hours ahead of the date when needed and get a signature at the CHS office. The form will need to be give to the coach when you are leaving. We prefer to have the boys travel both ways as a team but understand that occasionally there are other issues involved.

Water Polo Physicals
Please remember that formal preseason "hell weeks" starts this Thursday 9-11, Friday 3-5. See the blog for remaining days before school starts. The pool is currently being powered by a generator because of new construction at CHS so we are not certain if we will be in the pool this week. Equipment everyone should have are shorts, running shoes, speedo, goggles, towel, water and a mindset of being ready to get in shape.
I understand that we have gotten many more freshman over the last couple of weeks while I have been out of town so I don't have them on the roster yet and introduced to the blog. Please pass this reminder on to your friends so everyone gets the word. We could save some time Thursday if those that are not on the roster yet bring a piece of paper with their name, address, home phone, cell phone numbers, parents first names, grade and email address(es) on it for me to collect.
The CHS sports checkin package including a physical needs to be completed and signed off by the athletic department no later than 14 August. No practice until it is turned in and signed off after the 13th. The school office is supposed to be open next week if you need to pick up the package. I assume Golden Anderson, AD, will start signing off the forms later next week so you can get ahead of the game.
Any questions send me an email: rlangland@comcast.net

Release Form
Yesterday at practice we handed out a Release of Liability form to the 16 boys at practice. Those should come back signed on Friday or the next practice that you attend. For those not at CHS yesterday, please ask a coach for the form so you can get it completed and returned. Thanks

Spirit Packs...
Hi Everyone,
We're close to receiving our swimsuits and t-shirts (for everyone) and bags and sweatshirts (for those who ordered). YEAH!!!!
Thanks to Cara Cohen for all of her work in putting this together.
About the BOARD SHORTS....we ordered them from On the Beach a few weeks ago...but they are not being responsive to our calls and we have no idea if they were really ordered. We'll still work on & it will just have to be a seperate payment. So sorry for the inconvenience.
The costs:
ACTION NEEDED: Boys need to bring checks or cash to the ASB office to pay ASAP. If possible, by this Thursday. We're not supposed to give out any clothes until everyone has paid & it would be great, as long as they are available, to be able to use for this weekend's tournament.
There is a list of the boys and what they ordered along with the total due at this link:

Let me know if you have any questions....or any problems with the link..

Sports Physicals!!!!
Carmel High is offering Sports Physicals on May 31. This is the same day as our carwash (which starts at 10am at Carmel Rancho). So get your physical done and race down to the carwash.
Get this out of the way NOW so you can avoid having to pay and make a last minute doctor's visit to complete the athletic physical.
This past year was one of our best "prepared" seasons. Most students had their physicals done, paperworked turned into the office and signed off and approved by the first day of practice.
REMEMBER: YOU MUST HAVE THE PAPERWORK FROM THE PHYSICAL TURNED INTO THE OFFICE, SIGNED AND GIVEN BACK TO YOU. YOU MUST ALSO PAY YOUR ASB FEE TO THE OFFICE AS WELL. THIS PAPERWORK IS THEN DELIVERED TO ONE OF OUR COACHING STAFF BEFORE A STUDENT MAY PRACTICE.
