(From Coach Ed)
The Boy's Fr. & Soph. Teams had a very successful outing at the Oct. 9th Monte Vista Fr/Soph. Tournament. The Soph. (JV) group of athletes competed with perennial powerhouse, Bellarmine F/S (last year we lost to them 1-15 and had the worst drubbing in our three losses), in the opener. The boys played well under relentless defensive pressure and physical play. The Bells scored first, but Chimay Skinner tallied with 9 seconds remaining in the first period to tie the score. Bells scored two more times in the second period to pull ahead 1-3 & then 1-4 to close the third period. The fourth period was filled with ejections on both side of the ball. Sam Sunde had blocked a 5m penalty shot to light up the bench cheering section! We had multiple opportunities to score with inside water drives throughout the game; only to have them blocked by a tough goalie, crashing defensive double ups, and a few awarded ejections. Matt Gibson tallied twice in the final period on a pair of finely placed shots; and they ended contest with a 3-6 loss. Coach Ed was very please the the conditioning, heart, and team play throughout. We were IN the entire game the entire time! Kenny Doo ("Can Do") made several defensive stops, fronted 2m, and gummed things up on Defense. Trey Coppinger had four steals and made four attempts (two missed by 1/2" or less) making for treacherous waters for the opposition. Chimay had two assists and solid defense as well. We needed to shoot the drives just inside 4m- to get better angles to the goal corners before the goalie squeezes the drivers. We just need higher levels of competition and experience to put away some top teams. I consider Bellarmine's Fr./Soph team one of the top three teams in CCS. Way to go BOYS!!!
The second game for the "JV's" was with Serra's Fr. team. We blasted them 10-1 with seven players scoring and three assisting. Really no contest as we took a 7-0 lead into the fourth period, with everyone playing. Trey & Zack had two goals each. Sam Sunde had seven saves.
The final game for the Soph. "JV" was with Burlingame. We handled them with aplomb and a 17-4 score. Grant Thornburg exploded in the first and third periods, tallying three times in each period. Eight players scored and Zack, Chimay, & "Scooter" tallied multiple times. Matt Gibson had five assists & Chimay four to lead the offensive barrage of shots. "You Go Guys!"
Bottom line is that we are on the verge of competing with the top teams in our Central Coast Section. We need to send Fr. only to Hollister next year and find higher level competition at Nor Cals for the JV. We were very close to beating Bellarmine this year without the opportunity to play at that level enough. They do 5-6 morning practices a week, plus afternoon work. Ask yourselves what the value of the swim sets this year have been worth? Matt Gibson said, "Coach I'm not even winded!", at one point. Yes, I have done my best to work you in a variety of ways and many complained of being sore on Thurs./Fri., but you also were able to compete with schools much bigger than our own. To all my Sophomores: "You have done all that I ask of you and I am grateful for the journey we are sharing. Our time together is limited to a handful of days, a few league contests, and the Padre JV Invitational at the end of October. Keep striving and we will have much to celebrate at the close of the season."
Stats.:

Now, if that isn't good enough news, here's some even better new for the Fr. Squad: They have been competing with more experienced teams all season, and have not won many games. They had to play two of the three teams the JV group played (Burnlingame & Serra Fr.) Needless to say the challenge was there. We opened the tournament with a well decked out Burlingame F/S with two coaches presiding over the contest. Alon Yoeli scored in the first period and we were up 1-0. Two more goals by Alon and one for Burlingame ended the second frame at 3-1. Another goal by Alon and one by Dylan Larson ("Lars") and one for Burlingame left the third period at 5-2 our favor. The final quarter was tight defensively and we spotted Burlingame two goals before Jackson Trappin put away a fine shot from a strong counter attack to end the scoring and a 6-4 WIN for our Fr. team! Ethan Crane had eight saves in goal and did a good job of playing in front of the cage and cutting off angles. How important are those goalies?
The second game for the Fr. was with Santa Teresa an a previously unknown opponent who had lost to Burlingame. Santa Teresa scored first but we answered with a goal from Ethan Atkins and Joe Bergen to end the first frame at 2-1. Alon had been rolled by the grumpy referee for swimming into a player and would be done for the day. The second quarter saw Joe B., Ethan Atkins (2), and Mitchell Cuneo all score, to end the first half with a 6-1 lead. Santa Teresa scored three goals as we emptied the bench and they closed to within two goals for a close of the third period at 6-4. Jackson Trappin scored three times in the final frame and we held Santa Teresa scoreless for our second WIN with a final score of 9-4. Ethan Crane had 4 saves in goal.
The final game would see us pitted against the full tilt Serra Fr. program. We were the last game of the day and they lights had not been programed to come on and the tournament was behind schedule. Dylan Larson scored the only goal of the first frame for a 1-0 lead. The second period saw for players score; Dylan "Lars", Jake Rainey, Ethan Atkins "Monster Shot" that rattled the cage- through the goalie like a pin ball. Holly Toleado! Light was getting poor and the referees said the third period would be the last as we commenced the period with a 5-0 lead. We played the entire bench and Serra scored four unanswered goals in the third period, but we managed a WIN with 5-4 score with starters out. That is a great win and we saw a huge boost in confidence, learning, and team play all day. Way to go Boys! Take a look at Alon's Facebook photo post of the Fr. as they watch our game with Bellarmine. Some great shots by Alon and Ken Doo (thanks for both contributions). They are all students of the game and they are getting the TEAM concepts that we are striving for. The Fr. have been "stretched" all season and are now reaping the rewards to hard work and effort. Ethan did the best I have seen him do all season and continues to get better. Nate-- we still need backup in this arena. Great group of student/athletes to work with much to look forward to.
Fr. Stats.:
Ethan Crane 18 saves
Joe Bergen 2 steals, 2 goals
Dylan Larson 2 assists, 2 steals, 2 goals
Jackson Trappin 1 assist, 2 steals, 4 goals
Alon Yoeli 1 steal, 5 goals
Peter Mellinger 1 assist, 1 steal
Joe. Taormina 1 assist, 1 steal
Ethan Atkins 1 assist 1 steal, 4 goals
Thanks to all the parents who came to support our young players & coaches this past weekend. Coach Todd Langland thought many of you were opposition parents until it came time to "break camp" and then realized that ALL of you had come to watch and cheer us along!!! Thanks for the food, water, and shared time.
Coach Ed
