As the title explains "Hell Week" is not designed to be easy. So just come to grips with the fact that it will be a difficult physical and mental test, but we make big efforts to make it really fun at the same time.
As returning varsity players and alumni of our program know we utilize a slightly different methodology when it comes to our conditioning. We don't just swim. I am and have been a big fan of CrossFit for many years and utilize it regularly in the preparation of our water polo teams. I feel it has been a very helpful tool in the last few championship years.
Over the years I have designed what we call in CrossFit, "Benchmark" workouts or "wods" (workout of the day). These workouts are designed to be extreme tests of fitness that the player can measure or compare themselves against others. I call them "HERO" Wod's as they are named after players and coaches that have made a significant and lasting impact on our program.
Past players will tell you with a painful smile what feeling comes to mind when you mention wods like "Kyle" (7 rounds for time of 50 yards Head up Free, 10 burpees, 15 squats) or "Covie" (50 Burpees then a 200 Free for time) or the infamous "Bone". We don't do them everyday, but when we do they leave most on their backs gasping for air wondering what hit them.
This year during Hell Weeks we will be unveiling five new "Hero" wods.
Monday: "Zack" (Named after Zack Olivas. 2012 season's league Co-MVP and 2nd Team All CCS)
Tuesday: "Trey" (Named after Trey Coppinger. 2012 1st Team All MBL and County All Star. One of our best clutch goal scorers we've ever had)
Wednesday: "Skinner" (Named after Chimay Skinner. 2012 2nd Team All MBL)
Thursday: "Sunde" (Sam Sunde going to play at Stanford next year. Our 2nd Team All CCS standout goalie.)
Friday: "Ed's Garden" (Affectionately named after legendary coach Ed Sigourney. Ed resigned from coaching this year after over 25 years of building this program and our pool. Ed and his wife Bevy love their garden as he regularly would bring bags of apples, peppers and other various garden produce to share.) Don't let the title of this workout fool you. It will be no casual stroll through the garden :). Ed's Garden will be wicked :)
