(From Coach Ed)
Summary for the eventual Monte Vista (Homestead H.S.) Tournament:
It is good to be a coach....., no, it is great to be a coach of these guys! I enjoy getting to know the boys and their parents better each week. Parents you are an awesome group of supporters and we all appreciate you efforts on all levels!! Seventeen boys traveled and participated at this tournament. We tried different starting groups each game. The first game was a rematch with Serra which we won handily with a score of 12-1, The second game was with Aptos and we took a 3-3 tie into the start of the second half. Our boys stepped up the defense in the second half and held the "Mariners" scoreless for two period, while scoring three more goals to finish the contest with a 6-3 win. The last game was with Los Altos and we knew the competition was good by the scores of their previous games. Los Altos scored ten seconds into the game with an attack from the sprinter. We trailed by a score of 3-7 going into the fourth period. Everyone got playing time in the final period but we did not score again and L.A. scored five more goals. Much better shooting and swimming skills to be admired. It was a pleasure to play against a clean team Good learning experience for our squad, which played some stout defense in the third period but could not keep up with the overall swimming ability of the opposition.
Ben Price was our lone goalie for this tournament and chalked up 24 saves. Brady Hopkins leads us on defense with six steals, two assists, two field blocks, and two goals. Twelve players scored and six had assists during the tournament. Mike Airola continues to improve his overall understanding and execution of play with good awareness of teammate and opposition positioning. He had two assists, four steals, and two goals. Romi's play is very consistent with two assists, two steals, and two goals. Declan and Joe H. each scored three goals apiece.
We need to improve our offensive driving and balance skills as well as the man-up and man-down play. The defense is pretty solid for the most part but offensive skills need honing. We have seven practices to work out some more details. Busy season of games but the time is moving quickly. Looking forward to the hosted tournaments at home the next two weeks. It will be great to have teams coming to us for a change. We will need help running the desk on both weekends, so if you would like to help, let us know. Coach Ed
