Legacy Water Polo Hosts
Cal
men's club team, lead by coach Kirk Everist, in an exhibition game
against UC Davis men's club team, lead by Coach Daniel Leyson.
Coach Everist Coach Leyson
Join Legacy Water Polo Club on Saturday, August 9th, 6:00pm at Santa Catalina School pool, Monterey.
Legacy will host the #5 ranked CAL men in an exhibition game against the #11 ranked UC Davis men's team.
Head
Coach for the University of California Berkeley's Men's Water Polo
team, Kirk Everist has proven to be the perfect individual to perpetuate
the tradition of excellence that defines California water polo.
Everist has twice led the Golden Bears to the pinnacle of the sport;
directing his alma mater to its NCAA-record 13th national crown with a
8-6 win over USC in 2007 after a thrilling 7-6 last-second national
championship victory over the Trojans in 2006.
A
1990 Cal graduate, former three-time All-American, 1988 NCAA Player of
the Year and two-time United States Olympian, Everist, 45, earned the
2002 MPSF Coach of the Year honors in his inaugural season when he
guided Cal to the MPSF Tournament title and a national runner-up
finish. Then in 2004, he was inducted into both the Cal Athletic and
the USA Water Polo Hall of Fames.
"Kirk
has been an Olympian and an All-American, but I believe he is now a
better coach than he was as a player," said four-time NCAA Coach of the
Year Pete Cutino, Everist's former Cal mentor who passed away in
September
of 2004. "He is a very intense person who has always been a student of
the game. Kirk is everything we would want in a coach."
Legacy Water Polo is honored to host this visit and Legacy is grateful for use of Santa Catalina's exceptional aquatic facility.
Leyson's
experience features roles as assistant coach at perennial powers UCLA
(2011-13) and USC (2000-02), as well as serving as an assistant for the
U.S. men's water polo national team when it participated in the 2004
Olympic Games in Athens, Greece.
He
has worked alongside 10-time national coach of the year Jovan Vavic at
USC and assisted legendary coach Ratko Rudić, coach of four Olympic
gold medal teams. Leyson was a three-time All-America player at USC from
1990-92 who went to play for the U.S. National Team in 1994-95 and
later internationally in Barcelona, Spain.
Leyson served as UCLA's assistant coach during the 2012 and 2012 seasons, helping them to a championship in the powerful Mountain Pacific Sports Federation and a pair of runner-up finishes at the NCAA Championships.
Gate Fee: $8/person $25/family
